About Jimakuru

Jimakuru adds captions to your videos. Pick a video and it transcribes the speech right on your device and splits it into easy-to-read captions. Edit any caption in place and choose from 24 styles — classic, cute, bold and simple — and more than 70 fonts. Change colors, outlines, shadows and backgrounds freely, drag captions with your finger, and push them to the edge of the screen for vertical text. You can also translate captions (bilingual captions), add sound captions such as [Applause] and [Laughter], keep captions off faces automatically and cut silent pauses. Export the video with captions burned in, or as an SRT file or a text transcript. Audio and video are processed entirely on your device and never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What does Jimakuru do?

Jimakuru adds captions to a video automatically. Pick a video, and the app transcribes what is said on your iPhone or iPad, splits it into captions at pauses and sentence ends, and lets you correct the text, adjust the timing and choose a style. You can then export the video with the captions burned in, or export an SRT file or a text transcript.

Is it really free? Is there a watermark or a time limit?

It is free. Every feature is available, there is no watermark on exported videos, and there is no limit on how many videos you caption or how long they are. There are no in-app purchases and no subscription. Running costs are covered by ads.

Are my videos uploaded to a server?

No. Speech is transcribed with Apple's on-device speech recognition, and translation and export also run on the device. Your videos, audio and caption text are never sent to the developer. Only the recognition or translation data for a language is downloaded from Apple, once, the first time you use that language.

Can it translate captions or make bilingual captions?

Yes. Captions can be translated on the device. You can show only the translation, or show the translation in smaller text under the original line as bilingual captions.

Can I export an SRT file?

Yes. Besides a video with captions burned in (HEVC or H.264), you can export an SRT caption file or a plain-text transcript.

Can I make captions for short vertical videos?

Yes. A landscape video can be reshaped to 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, with the empty space filled by a blurred copy of the video or black. Captions can highlight word by word as they are spoken, and silent gaps and filler words can be cut.

How often do ads appear?

A small banner is shown at the bottom of the screen and a box is shown while a video is loading or exporting. A full-screen ad appears at most once a day, after an export has finished. Ads are non-personalized and the app does not ask for tracking permission.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 26.0 or later.
